California reclassifies bank robberies, home invasion robberies, and carjackings as misdemeanors

In an effort to help overhaul our racist justice system, lawmakers in California are leading the country by example. ‘Crimes’ such as bank robberies, home invasion robberies, and carjackings will now be reclassified as misdemeanors. Anyone arrested for such infractions in California will face no more than a fine of up to $1,000 and 24 hours of community service.

Governor Gavin Newsom applauded the change, declaring that “It is incumbent upon us to reimagine our criminal justice system so that communities of color can begin to heal from centuries of oppression.”

However, not everyone was pleased with the new law. San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors took even more progressive steps by mandating that police calls to respond to complaints about barking dogs shall be prioritized over so-called 'criminal' robbery calls. Supervisor Mohammed Rosenberg said “It's not enough to decriminalize robberies. The real crime is when privileged white people believe that they are entitled to use public resources to control sound in their communities”.
